You might have noticed from the TV, in any natural disaster or emergency, the first item to go in the supermarkets is bottled water. So it stands to reason that you don’t want to join that crowd.
During the recent Hurricane Irma that struck through the Caribbean, most stores were completely emptied of bottled water within a couple of hours. And to make matters worse, there were reports of severe price gouging with water being sold at an outrageous $99 a bottle.
So to avoid these issues, you should store water in your house in preparation for such an emergency. That’s the first step to not being a victim of circumstances.
However, even with the best preparation you may not have access to drinking water. Your stored water may be wiped out, stolen or contaminated. The stores will almost certainly be sold out even if you could get there.
So you are stuck! What can you do?
In this article, I’ll explain how you can find water and make it drinkable, or potable as it’s sometimes known.

Now that you’ve found the water, you can’t just gulp it down like a champ. Do that and you’ll likely end up seriously ill if there are protozoa and viruses in the water. That’s where these water purification tips come into play. Before drinking, you need to filter and purify it. And it’s important that you know the difference between these two.
Depending on the turbidity – that’s cloudiness or haziness caused by large numbers of individual particles that are generally invisible to the naked eye – of the water, you may or may not need to filter it. If it’s murky and unclear, then filtering it is a must.
You can actually use regular coffee filters to filter your water if you don’t have a purpose built product. Once you’ve run your water through this first filter stage, you’ll have removed all the larger particles.
Do note that even if the water is clear at this stage, it’s still NOT ready to drink.
One of the best ways to kill all bacteria and harmful organisms in the water is to boil it. However, if you do not have access to a gas stove or a fire, you’ll have to use other methods.
